What is Literacy Alive?Literacy Alive! is a national initiative among participating chapters of Kappa Delta Pi. In Rowan's Eta Psi Chapter, it presents itself as an exciting event held each spring in the Education Building, where students in grades K-5 are invited from local community schools to come and experience the wonder of reading in a unique themed setting. In past years, we have had an array of themes such as Shoot for the Moon and Read Among the Stars and Camp Read. During the event, we utilize the entire third floor of Education Hall, and committees of KDP members work together to create an interactive environment, creating different projects, games, and activities within each of the different subject-based rooms of: Reading, History, Math, Science, Art, Music, and Physical Education. "Tour Guides" (KDP Members) take groups of students through to each of the different rooms, ending with the Book Room, where each child is sent home with a book. It is a fun event for both our members and for the children attending, and it is exciting to see how Literacy is interwoven into each of the different disciplines during this program, helping to develop a lifelong love of learning in the lives of young students.
In the past, various themes have been done, such as Reading Across the World in 2014 Reading Rodeo! in 2013, Shipwrecked! on Reading Island in 2012, Camp Read! in 2011, and Shoot for the Moon and Read Among the Stars in 2010. |
